WHO IS MRS. ARLENE DAY?
Mrs. Arlene Day aka “Mama Day” is an author, motivational speaker and advocate for mental illness. She is cherished not only for her gifts as an excellent orator and writer but for her commitment to her community. She has created a loyal fan base both in the United States and abroad that have invested and believed in the insights of Mama Day making her a successful speaker.
Mama Day was born in the Bronx, New York where she led a good life and was an excellent student graduating from high school with a degree in Nursing. She got married and worked as a LPN throughout Long Island and New York City. She raised three beautiful children in Roosevelt, Long Island all of whom were A students and graduated from universities. Mama Day was an active parent and known throughout the entire Roosevelt community. While raising her three children as a single parent, Mama Day worked for seventeen years at Eastern Airlines and two years for Donald Trump as an airplane servicer.
She is an author of a memoir titled “I Promised My Friend”. A film called Perseverance documenting Arlene Day’s extraordinary life was made. Mama Day is also a frequent guest star on Taboo Talk radio. Taboo Talk is a Christian talk show hosted by her daughter, Lady Charmaine Day.
In 2003, after working in nursing for over 40 years, Mama Day’s responsibilities inspired the vision behind her commitment to advocate for the mentally ill. Mama Day was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and she determined to not let the disease have her but to be a successful survivor and to help others on the road of recovery. She joined the National Association for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and became a presenter as part of their In Our Own Voice (IOOV) Program in 2008. In recognition of her significant contribution to their In Our Own Voice Program, NAMI inducted Mama Day into their Hall of Fame in May 2011.
Mrs. Arlene Day is on the board of directors for Saint Mary's Senior Marlins. She serves as Vice President for the Saint Mary's Senior Marlins as well.
Since 2016, Mama Day has been on the Saint Mary's Senior Marlins Swim Team. They are the 2016 New York City Park's Department Senior Swim Olympic Champions to present. Mama Day has earned 7 medals from swim competitions: 1 Hardest Worker, 1 Gold for synchronized swimming, 3 Silver medals': 1 for synchronized swimming and two for the breast stroke, 2 Bronze medals: 1 for tube racing and the other for free style swimming.
September 24, 2018, Mrs. Arlene Day had her stage debut in "This Is My Brave" to an audience of 350 people. She was one of thirteen people chosen out of over a hundred people who auditioned for the show.
During her downtime, Mama Day enjoys learning Spanish, knitting, crocheting, and doing 1000 piece puzzles.
Mama Day enjoys being a grandmother with the name "Madear" to her four grandchildren: 4 girls and a boy whom she loves dearly.
